Invest in Lisara’s future in the world of dance

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Kind-hearted Individuals,

I’m Lisara, born and bred in Sri Lanka with a deep desire for growth and making a difference. I have been dancing since the age of 2 (I am 21 now), starting with my parents who instilled in me a love for the arts and have been my biggest supporters despite their own struggles in life. With hard work and dedication, I have come far, learning and performing with some of Sri Lanka’s best. From Meshground, a platform for movement arts, to Deanna School of Dancing, I have expanded my body, mind, and soul. Recently, I graduated with a Certificate in Performance from Meshground and apprenticed with the dance company under the direction and support of choreographer and director, Umeshi Rajeendra, making my dream a reality one move at a time. This year, Meshground selected me via an application for another amazing opportunity to participate in the prestigious American Dance Festival held at Duke University from June 13 to July 13 with a tuition scholarship. I couldn’t be more grateful and excited. However, this is where I need your help!

We all know pursuing the arts, let alone dance, is probably one of the biggest curveballs you could face, especially in Sri Lanka, where not only are the arts discouraged as a profession, but opportunities are rare. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with the economic collapse which befell Sri Lanka in 2022 has made most of our lives stand still. Our families are still picking up the pieces and rebuilding like most. Yet, I believe in curving, spiraling, and dancing around the curveball with resilience and focus to find different approaches. While I am well aware of the risks and challenges of choosing to pursue the arts, I also realize after lots of thought, dedication of my whole life thus far to dance, and spending every extra penny on furthering my studies even when we couldn’t afford it, that dance is the only practice that has allowed me to be my true authentic self—spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Having watched what the earlier generations have gone through, I know I am making the right decision. Failing to utilize the qualifications and experience I have gained would not only be a shame but would let down who I am at my core. With a tuition scholarship, thanks to Meshground’s relationship with ADF, I just need your help in donating, spreading the word, and sending all the good vibes for my journey to cover the remaining expenses.

Cost transparency:

Airfare: $990
Accommodation: $1,630 for 31 nights
Food: $1,000 for 32 days including travel with layovers
Total: $3,620

I will keep you updated with my progress and time at ADF. I would be so thankful. This opportunity represents a pivotal moment in my artistic journey. It's not just about attending a festival, it's about seizing the chance to further my education, refine my skills, and broaden my horizons. By supporting me, donors aren't just helping a dancer fulfill her dreams, they're investing in the future of dance in Sri Lanka, fostering cultural exchange, and promoting artistic excellence.

Your contribution will not only cover my journey expenses but will also empower me to pursue my passion with renewed vigor. Every donation brings me closer to my goal and enables me to continue my pursuit of excellence in the art of dance. I invite you to join me on this transformative journey and be a part of my story as I strive to make my mark on the global stage.

Much gratitude!
