April 15th, 2020 Update:
I have received confirmation from local hospitals that these intubation boxes are in need, so I hope to deliver them soon. Thank you for your support!
Hello! We are a volunteer group of high schoolers in San Diego, California. Like most students, We’ve have been practicing social distancing and staying home to minimize the rate of COVID-19 and aid our medical workers on the frontlines in managing the spread of the virus. Recently, we’ve been looking for more ways to support medical professionals and actively reduce disease transmission. A doctor family friend has informed us that these intubation boxes are needed in emergency departments, especially in the San Diego area.

These intubation boxes, which are based off Dr. Lai Hsien-Yung’s original design from Taiwan, provide an additional layer of protection between the staff and the patient. These acrylic, easily sanitizable boxes massively reduce the risk medical staff face when intubating a COVID-19 patient by containing airborne contaminants and bodily fluids. It’s important that we help protect the health of our medical staff so they can continue to treat patients without continuously worrying about doctor-patient disease transmission.

I’ve reached out to multiple hospitals within the San Diego area and have received many requests for these intubation boxes. After much research and surveying, I’ve found the most cost-effective method of making these boxes while still maintaining the effectiveness and quality of its design. Our intubation boxes are 20”x24”x16”, making them slightly deeper than Dr. Lai Hsien-Yung’s design. Each box has two holes in the front that make intubation and treatment both convenient and safe. Each box costs $65 to make, and every dollar goes toward the purchase of raw material and acrylic glue only. All boxes are put together by me and my family, and we hope to be able to deliver at least 30 boxes to local hospitals to aid them in this pandemic.

We predict that these intubation boxes will successfully reduce the risk frontline workers face everyday, and will help satisfy the heavy demand in the San Diego area.
Thank you for your support in keeping San Diego's frontline medical professionals safe!
