Hello, my name is Chris Rowell. When I was 16 years-old I picked up a rugby ball and my life was changed forever. The Chuckanut Bay Rugby Club’s u19 youth team gave me an outlet to express myself and played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. My best friendships and memories are a direct result of my involvement in rugby and being part of the sport has shaped my identity; instilling lifelong values and helping me become a better person.
I have continued to be involved in the game, coaching the Chuckanut Bay Rugby Club’s youth and men’s teams, a member of the Logger’s High School All-Star program, a junior staff member with the Eagle’s Impact Rugby Academy, and currently the head coach of the Western Washington University Women’s Rugby Team.
Recently, I was awarded an unconditional acceptance offer to study in the Sport Management and Leadership master’s program at Cardiff Metropolitan University for the 2021 academic year. Cardiff Met, located in Wales, is one of the best universities to study sport in the United Kingdom and fields several teams that compete in the BUCS (British Universities and College Sports) Super League -the equivalent of the NCAA in the United States. For anyone who has a desire to improve and learn in a high-level environment, this is a dream come true and the opportunity of a lifetime.
After completing this program I plan on returning to the Pacific Northwest and giving back the information, lessons, and insights to our greater rugby community. Sharing this knowledge with both the Western Men’s and Women’s team as well as high school programs is a way the sport in our corner of the world can improve. I am a believer in linking with each other at all rugby levels rather than ranking against one another and we can grow both the game, coaching knowledge, and opportunities for players together.
I believe that rugby players make better people. This sport, the community, and culture has been one of the single most impactful sources of positivity in my life and I know it has done the same for so many others. The thought of participating in this educational opportunity and bringing the knowledge I acquire back to my rugby community excites and inspires me. I continue to be grateful to the rugby community for all it has given me and I appreciate your support and consideration. Thank you.
