Greetings and thank you for visiting my page! My name is Natalie Corral-Gutierrez and I am a third year undergraduate student at Allegheny College, majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Religious Studies.
I have been accepted into a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in a month long abroad program during the summer to study in depth how the historical wars and waterways have shaped contemporary Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos while visiting these beautiful nations. Among other topics, studies will include the impact of colonization, ethnic conflicts and genocide, US invasions on cultural and ecological health and most importantly, the lingering groundwater contamination from Agent Orange and the exploration of potential new water wars in this region.
It is through my interests and future goals of studying and practicing medicine, that I find myself pursuing the challenge to research struggles of healthcare or lack thereof in these nations and its correlation that religious values play in the access to such care.
It will be during my time visiting these nations that I will apply and immerse myself into the communities, volunteering at service areas within these regions and attend seminars with health care facilities further researching the suffrage with intentions of finding solutions to world health problems.
As you can imagine, this all comes with a cost. I have been presented with scholarship and grant awards which have tremendously helped bring down the costs. I am left with a balance of $4,000 that will help cover flights, health insurance, local transportation, meals and housing during my stay abroad.
