THE PROJECT:
‘INTERFERENCE’ – A quiet sci-fi drama.
A collaboration between Tack Man Films and Winkle Productions.
LOGLINE:
A withdrawn dockworker shelters an unusual creature formed of metal and wire, a fragile line of connection forces him to confront a burden he has long refused to hear.
SYNOPSIS:
Living on the outskirts of a fading and forgotten coastal town, William, a lonely dockworker, drifts through his life of the same routine, kept up for decades. One night, walking home from work, he discovers a strange and unusual creature, dragging itself up the deserted beach. With a broken radio for a head, the creature begins to move, hum and churn out jarring radio signals. Drawn to the obscurity of the thing, he drags it home. A fragile connection forms between the two, man and machine. He repairs the creature as best he can, learning to interpret the mechanical gestures and disjointed sounds. What William doesn’t realise, though, is that the creature’s mind is its own complex thing. It’s no dog to be trained, to be locked up in the shed. Slowly learning to communicate, stripping back human connection to its quietest, rawest
form, William is forced to confront the hidden parts of his life he was always too stubborn to make amends with.
MEET THE CREW:
Director: Elsie Gregory
As director and writer for this short film, I crafted ‘Interference’ to be a quiet science-fiction tale rooted in emotional realism rather than spectacle. Using the fantastical elements of a new, exciting creature, brought to life using stop motion, we follow and explore grief, guilt
and the human need for connection. Visually, the film is grounded in coastal liminality: pylons, dockyards, open fields and the vast
ocean become spaces for soft contemplation. With intense focus on the human experience through stripped-back dialogue and patient observation, ‘Interference’ creates an intimate encounter between the human and the unknown, inviting the audience to listen closely to
what lingers when words fail.
Producer and Editor: Paris Matthews
As the editor and producer for Interference. This combination of roles means I’m capable of discovering locations that I know will work atmospherically and be ideal for seamlessly compositing our stop-motion robot within the scenes. I have experience in producing and editing mixed media films, having worked on festival achieving short films such as The Monster. The reason I chose to do this project was because I saw the potential within the script for a short film that not only tells a message about communication but also that, with good budgeting and time management, I believe could make it far in the festival scene. I will be submitting the final piece to Cannes, Sundance, Cinecity, etc etc.
Animation Director: bbsheps
As the animation director and concept artist on 'Interference', where I will be bringing the character Yorkie to life with stop motion animation. I have done a lot of work in stop motion before, most recently on my films 'The Monster' and 'Sun Day'. I have been able to bring my films to film festivals internationally through my production company Tack Man films, which Interference will be co-produced by. I have always been a big fan of worldbuilding for strange uncomfortable stories and visuals, which I hope I can achieve with this project.
Director of Photography: Ellie Edmonds
Cinematography has always been a passion of mine. Since high school I’ve always loved the idea of being behind the scenes, capturing the magic of a story and bringing ideas to life. I love being a part of a group and working with my friends to create a magical experience for our audience. So, with the help of the amazing people I will be working with for this project, I can't wait to see not only what we are all capable of, but also the amazing final product we will produce together.
Sound and Music Composer: Joe Charrington
When composing for films, my first port of call is always understanding; leaning into the ideas, narratives and often complicated emotions that surround both the characters and the world they’re placed in. Writing with this in mind, it not only allows the pieces to hold a sympathetic gaze with the visual, one that often works as a symbiosis with each playing off the other, but it also invites spectators to contemplate what they’re seeing on a different kind of sensory level. Having worked in both soundtrack composition for films as well as audio installations, this marriage of ideas is one that will always be at the top of my list.
WHAT WE NEED TO BRING THIS PROJECT TO LIFE:
'William was half-carrying, half-dragging the thing along the
beach. Homeward bound.'
We plan to create a mixed-media film combining stop motion animation with live action in order to fully capture the unnatural sci-fi robotic nature of our robot, Yorkie. For this we need to cover material and time costs. We of course also plan to reward our talent playing the role of William Rayner with a minimum of £100, as well as any incredible illustrators or graphic designers who help bring this production to life.
Furthermore, we will be spreading this film as far and wide as we can. We want to reach audiences across film festivals like:
- Cannes
- Sundance
- BFI London Film Festival
- Cinecity
When considering all of this, on top of the budget we need for a variety of costs such as: location, travel, food, props, and film insurance; we have set a hopeful goal of £2000! However, we can only reach this with your help!
We hope the premise of our film interests you, and with your help we will be able to bring it to its full potential.
