Marathon for John Shaw & Wigan’s ICU
Donation protected
In January 2021 my Dad was rushed into hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 and suffering an infection in his gallbladder. The first week of being in hospital my Dad was still walking, talking, eating, breathing etc for himself. We was FT’ing him every day having a chat and laugh. After 1 week, the infections had taken over his body.
We received a call during the night that my Dad was being moved to intensive care as he was incredibly unwell. He had rapidly deteriorated and he was going to be put in an induced coma. Hearing the words “your Dad might not come home from here, the next few days are critical” will forever haunt my mind and replay in my head. My Dad was put to sleep for 4 weeks.
2 months later... My Dad is still on intensive care, however he is awake, still unable to speak, breathe or eat for himself. There is a hell of a long way to go and we still haven’t heard the words “he will be okay” or “there is nothing more to worry about” but he is very slowly making slight progress. Some days there are set backs, 2 steps forward and 1 step back but he has already come so far. He is still on the ventilator and after all this time hasn’t moved out of bed but we are seeing improvements some days and I couldn’t be prouder to call him my Dad. He really is my superhero and showed me that no matter what life throws at you, you stay strong and never give up, and you even do it with a smile on your face too (well most days anyway haha!)
COVID-19 has affected everyone in different ways over the past year and it hasn’t been easy for anyone, whether you have had the virus or not. But we have all shown that we can be more caring/considerate and appreciative of not only the things we have in life but mainly the people in our lives. I am so grateful to the NHS and the work their staff do, I couldn’t appreciate your dedication anymore, you really are a group of the most kind hearted and selfless people. To say thank you for continuing to look after my Dad and doing everything you possibly can for him I wanted to raise money for the staff on the intensive care ward in Wigan Infirmary. Unfortunately the staff can’t accept money for themselves and I don’t expect to raise thousands (which they definitely deserve) but if I can raise enough money to say thank you for the amazing work they do and then the staff can advise what they would want the money spending on that would be amazing!
So on Saturday 3rd April myself and a few of the people I love most will be walking a marathon to raise money. To anyone that knows us realises how big a challenge this will be as we are no exercise lovers, I’m sure there will be a lot of moaning on the way, but now I’ve told my Dad we’re doing it there’s no going back! To everyone walking with me I physically can’t thank you all enough, you really are the best support I could ever wish for and I don’t know what I would of done without you through these difficult times ❤️ So if you can spare a couple of quid to thank those that have given the world and more not only through the pandemic but every day then we would really would appreciate it and I know my Dad would too!
If anyone would like to donate anything to the ward please feel free to message me
Foot massages welcome from Sunday 4th April onwards...
Thank you everyone x x
