On my family trip to Zimbabwe last year I was able to visit Mpilo Hospital, which is the hospital I was born in 18 years ago. I was a premature baby and thankfully was able to thrive and survive due to the medical equipment available back then.
Unfortunately due to the economic downfall of Zimbabwe, medical equipment in the intensive care baby unit is now scarce; but the amount of babies entering the ward is increasing. Knowing how privileged I was in 2002 and seeing the situation in 2019 really inspired me to help other zimbabwean premature babies.

Now because of the scarce resources, the babies have to share neonatal phototherapy units, which are used to treat neonatal hyperbilirubinemia aka. neonatal jaundice. As a preterm baby I did suffer from neonatal jaundice but survived due to the available treatments, which are not abundantly available in Mpilo hospital today. The babies were not benefitting 100% from the 2 photo lights available as they had to share and be swapped out throughout the day. Without proper treatment neonatal jaundice can cause severe complications.

I feel connected to this cause as Mpilo hospital assisted in my survival as a premature baby, I was once in that position and am deeply saddened that these babies are not receiving the same care as I did.
I am aiming to fundraise enough money for 2 more neonatal phototherapy units, and two baby measuring scales, as well as the transportation, delivery and installation of these products.

Please help me fundraise as I would love for more premature babies born in Zimbabwe to have the same story as me. Once I fundraise I will seek help from the Thuthuka Khayelihle charity who have representatives in Zimbabwe, which will help facilitate the sourcing and delivery of these products to the intensive care baby unit in Mpilo Hospital.
