Insurance Ran Out. Cancer Didn’t. Please Help Abigail.

Hi, my name is Sarah, and I’m writing this as a friend who loves Abby and her family. I never thought I'd be setting up something like this, but here we are — because the truth is, they need help.
Abby is a spunky 10 year old that’s been fighting kidney cancer. She’s been through more than anyone should have to endure — multiple surgeries, chemo, radiation, a feeding tube, months in the hospital, ICU stays, daily pain — and now, she’s facing the rest of her treatment without insurance. After an unexpected 3 month hospital stay that racked up charges in the hundreds of thousands, her insurance is no longer covering her care after she hit their one million lifetime maximum. She’s still in the middle of treatment — still fighting for her life — and now her family has to cover everything out of pocket. They didn’t ask for this. But I’m asking for them.
Imagine this: Abby and her mom flew from the Bahamas to Florida for what was supposed to be a quick medical check-up — just a couple of days away. But hours after arriving at the hospital, a doctor pulled her mom aside with life-changing news: Abby had a large mass on her left kidney. She needed to be admitted immediately to the oncology floor for urgent surgery.
That was February. Everything changed in that moment — and Abby hasn’t been able to go home since.
Since then, Abby has endured two major surgeries, the first to remove her kidney, and the second to repair a rare and dangerous post-surgical complication (an internal hernia). She’s spent nearly three months in the hospital, including a week in the ICU, where she had to be heavily sedated because the pain was simply too much for her little body to bear.
Abby has undergone months of chemotherapy and some radiation. She has experienced daily nausea and vomiting, extreme weight loss, and excruciating abdominal pain. The chemo has caused temporary nerve damage, and she’s had to relearn how to walk after being bedridden and severely malnourished. Abby has to supplement with an NG feeding tube and uses cartons of specialized formula just to stay nourished. She uses a walker to move around safely and takes strong pain medication and expensive antinausea meds just to make it through the day.
And still — she’s not done.

The Financial Reality
We are so grateful that Abigail had insurance to begin with — it gave her a fighting chance. But that chance came with a cost. The family has now been told that Abigail has reached her insurance’s $1 million lifetime maximum, and she is only halfway through her treatment.
Now, her family is responsible for every cost — upfront:
• Ongoing chemotherapy (each round costs ~$12,000)
• Imaging and procedures
• Hospitalizations and emergency care
• NG formula and medical supplies
• Medications, specialists, mobility equipment, and more
• Plus they will also be responsible for all the balances left at the hospitals since insurance stopped processing her claims

Abby does not qualify for Medicaid or federal/state aid in the U.S., and she’s ineligible for most U.S. charities due to being Bahamian.
They’ve also faced major travel and housing expenses as the family has been forced to be split apart to ensure Abby gets the best possible care. She cannot safely leave Florida due to her fragile condition and complex care needs. That means she and her mom can’t return home to the Bahamas — to her dad and little sister — until this is all done.
Why We’re Asking for Help
Continuing Abby’s care is non-negotiable. She is vibrant, funny, kind, and unimaginably strong. She deserves every chance to grow up — and she’s doing everything she can to get there.
Abby is such a special little girl. She loves God, loves her church, loves her family. She adores all animals, big and small (even insects! – she has kept pet grasshoppers, moth larvae and lotsss of frogs). Therapy dogs are her favorite part of the hospital, and her current favorite activity is watching the puppies play at a local Florida dog park. She’s never met a soft plushie she didn’t like, and would eat her weight in bacon if her parents let her. She’s a straight A student, and the kid who stepped in when a new kid needed a friend. She wants to run a pet shelter when she grows up. Abby is a sweetheart that has a bright future ahead of her.
If you are able to support her family, in any amount, it will go directly toward Abby’s medical care and essential living needs. And whether or not you can give financially, we welcome prayers, shares, and love in any form.
Thank you for standing with Abby. From the bottom of my heart — thank you for helping this family keep going.
With hope,
Sarah, for Abby
