The Prophet, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, said:
طلبُ العلمِ فَريضةٌ على كلِ مُسلم رواه البيهقي
“Seeking the [obligatory] religious knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (Related by al-Bayhaqiyy.)
Knowledge is the only thing in Islam which is completely fard (obligatory). Other acts like fasting, praying, hajj etc, some of it is fard and some nafl (voluntary). But there is no nafl in Ilm (knowledge). There are certain things that are fard ain which each & every single Muslim has to learn and the rest is fard kifaya which at least someone in the community has to acquire. Otherwise the entire community will be sinful.
Those who have courageously set out to seek Ilm for the pleasure of Allah Swt should be supported by the rest of us becuase they are fulfilling a command of Allah. In this day and age, there are very few of us that are actually striving towards acquiring Ilm. Especially in a third world country like Bangladesh where I am right now.
Most of the madrasas are orphanages and many of students are there because they have no other place to go. So when these individuals graduate and become an Alim (scholar) they're confused as to what they have to do and how they can benefit the rest of the ummah. One of the reasons being that they were in the institution because they had no other place to go.
After studying for 8 years in a madrasa myself, it saddens me to know that many of our scholars are simply content with leading Salah in a masjid. A scholar in Islam has a great responsibility and unfortunately the condition is such in our country that most of them are just tasked with nothing more then leading the prayer.
So we want to open an institution here in Dhaka where they will be able to further their knowledge and learn various ways and techniques as to how they can benefit the ummah. Our intention is to further educate our scholars with courses like Ifta (Fatwa Issuance) Adab (Arabic Literature) Maktab & Hifz (Quran Memorization) for our little ones and part time classes for adults. There will be a orphanage as well that will provide meals three times a day and educate the orphans as well without any fees. And any other student that is not capable of paying fees and is eligible to receive zakat, will be given zakat money collected by the madrasa.
We will also provide services like a 24 hour islamic call service, marriage counseling, taking out time from our studies to write letters of support to Muslim inmates and helping those in need to name just a few. Through these services we hope to bridge the gap between our scholars and the average person. So someone who needs to know something doesn't have to Google it but can rather learn directly from a scholar. Our Islamic tradition and the way we acquired knowledge has always been from person to person and we want to restablish that in our country.
Our esteemed teacher Shaikul Hadith Allama Mufti Mahmud who teaches Bhukari & other books in a madrasa during the day and holds online classes & educates youth from Germany, Syria & USA has agreed to help the scholars in our area by opening up such an institution. The name of the institution will be معهد العلوم الاسلامية ( Institute of Islamic Sciences ) and it will situated here in south banasree, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
As we know to open an institution, funds are required. But we aren't trying to make a huge building, we are just trying to rent an apartment/flat where the students can stay and learn. And like the majority of the population the students are also very poor. So we need money for their books, food, teachers salary, etc I'm reaching out to my brothers & sisters back home & around the globe because this is something that will be very easy for you.
When we go out to eat, we easily spend $20. So if we were to give that money to the madrasa, a student will be able to eat for an entire month. Also it's impossible to run an institution in USA or Europe with such small donations but over here in Bangladesh, an institution can run smoothly with such small donations. So we are asking our brothers & sisters to donate generously to the institute and earn the reward of sadqa jariya(continuous).
I would like to end this humble request with the word of our beloved prophet saw who said الدال على الخير كفاعله Ad daallu 'alal khairi kafaa'ilihi (Tirmidhi) Meaning: People who invites goodness gets the same reward to the person who invited.
So because of your donations you will be getting reward for all the good deed that takes place in this institution. We have set the goal of $5000, which inshallah if we get the madrasa can run for an entire year. So please contribute generously.
Important Note: This story was written by our beloved brother Abdus Samad in Bangladesh who has been studying there for the last 8 years. Alhamdulillah he has been able to complete his studies and now wishes to establish this institution with the help of his teachers.
This campaign has been launched on his behalf and will be overlooked by Nafiul Nafi Prodhan.
