Purpose: To create a multipurpose learning environment and to enhance both the learning and teaching experience in my classroom.
Dear Family, Friends, & Colleagues
My name is Gillian Seals and I am embarking through my third year as a 6th through 8th grade math teacher at Lansing Charter Academy, in Lansing, MI. I love both teaching and having the opportunity to shape and inspire the minds of children who initially do not love math or education. Since my youth, I have been excited about learning and believe that students deserve to be excited about and to have fun when learning. In my three years of teaching I have continuously searched for ways to engage my students. Some strategies I have utilized include the Kagan strategies, hands on learning, and songs. However, I have recently been inspired by the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA, which introduced me to the novel tool, the ActivExpression Student Response Device by Promethean World.
I am currently reading Ron Clark’s book titled, “The End of Molasses Classes: Getting Our Kids Unstuck: 101 Extraordinary Solutions for Parents and Teachers.” Ron’s 12th solution was to “Set the tone for the love of learning,” and the 19th point was “Make learning magical.” I am on a mission to help students love learning by making it come to life, and I believe that the ActivExpression response device could play a key role completing this mission.
In this link, I have created a Go Fund Me project in efforts to raise $2,500 to purchase 32 ActivExpression Student Response Devices sold through Promethean World (including shipping and handeling as well as the Go Fund Me fees). These devices will allow me to differentiate, innovate, and inspire my students to be fully engaged in the mathematics classroom. In a room with very limited technology, these devices will allow students to become 21st Century learners excited to be challenged. My students deserve more than just good teaching, they deserve extraordinary and out of this world teaching. During my first year as a teacher, 61% of my students showed significant growth on the Kentucky State Test, placing me in top tier of Jefferson County teachers at the end of the 2013 to 2014 school year. I believe that with tools such as the ActivExpression, even more students could grow under my guidance, and I can continue to inspire and encourage students to give their all when learning.
In my personal philosophy on education, I believe that encouraging students to love learning at a young age will inspire them to learn for the rest of their lives. As a full time teacher and part-time graduate student, with my husband as a full time graduate student, affording this product is beyond our means, but with the help of the community, family, friends, and sorors, we can help be change agents in creating our future leaders, doctors, and artists. It takes a village to raise a child no matter how distant or close. ANY contribution would greatly be appreciated.
I believe in our students and I believe in innovative forms of educating. I am now asking for you to believe in my passion to educate, but more importantly to invest in the students opportunity to cultivate knowledge.
