Participants: 50 Chicago high school students from underrepresented backgrounds (i.e. students of color, young women interested in STEM, low-income students, etc.)
-- Why This Matters
Illinois computer science graduates are 4.5 times more likely to work in Chicago than San Francisco, the second most common destination
Women comprise 47% of the total U.S. workforce but hold only 24% of STEM jobs
African-Americans make up 11% of the U.S. workforce overall but represent 9% of STEM workers, while Hispanics comprise 16% of the U.S. workforce but only 7% of all STEM workers
We need MORE diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Chicago is growing technology hub and our youth need to be exposed to it.
Our event will allow students to use their skills (whether technical or not), guide them through the design thinking process, and help tackle some of Chicago's most pressing issues. -- About Our Event
Our design thinking challenge will bring diversity of thought, skill, and experiences to plan, design, assess, and propose solutions to some of the most pressing issues affecting communities across Chicago.
Many issues are affecting Chicago. Yet, the impact of these issues most affects youth across the city. Ironically, youth are often the ones that are left out of the design process of legislation, innovation, and initiatives across the city. We hope that this event serves as a paradigm shift to this ideology in that we give agency to the most impacted stakeholders: youth.
We would like to invite 50 high school students to come join us on August 9-10 and present their own solutions to a panel of community leaders in Chicago.
The students will be addressing some of the issues below:
AI’s impact on Society
