Hi, my name is Makeva Armant, and I am the founder of Madame Armant's Immersion Cities, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve students in under-resourced school communities by creating opportunities to discover the world through language education and cultural exploration.
Recently, we’ve launched our inaugural summer camp which was established to inspire a love of world languages with a focus on combining adventures of the outdoors with cultural activities from around the world. This year, our focus is the Spanish-speaking world, thus students will be immersed in cultural customs like cooking and dancing, arts and crafts, and camp traditions, while also learning about common animals within Maryland State Parks. They will also participate in activities like archery, canoeing and much more in the target language.
We hope to grow expiditiously and abundantly to bring more language-based opportunities to students across the Greater Baltimore region to provide opportunities they could not get otherwise. Because our target audience includes students from under-served communities, we are looking to offset the costs of this overnight world language summer camp by asking YOU as well as local businesses to donate and/or sponsor a camper. We hope to make our camp accessible to ALL students with a primary focus on those who qualify for free or reduced lunch in school. But in order to make that happen, we need the help of the community to cover the expenses of the camp which includes overnight cabin rentals, meals, Spanish instruction, leadership development training, sports, dance lessons and more.
Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, “The limits of my language, mean the limits of my world.” Our mission is to remove the limits placed on the lives of under-served youth and to act as a liaison to intercultural relationships, global awareness and world travel. So, what do you say? Will you help us bring the world to students who can’t afford to go out and see it?
