Innana’s Film Schooling- Help Build a Queer Future

My name is Innana Rose Lorette-Watson. I’m coming into my second year as a Lang student at The New School.  As a young queer artist and activist, I hope to spend my life using many forms as mediums for change. I came into school with a focus on film, but have since realized the importance of diversity in my practice and have worked to incorporate all of my favorite forms into my education. Tattoo, florals, religious studies, textile work, and community enrichment. with this broadening lens, I have found my happiest work connects and uplifts myself and my community. 

These discoveries have only strengthened my original intention in seeking out a higher education "To use this experience to form my own opinions and conclusions, and to share my resources as a form of mutual aid." 

In my first year of school, I had a focus on the sacred, specifically in tattoos. My focus has been on embodiment for my queer community. I work to decorate these bodies in a way that connects the person to their physical form, creating in this art, an embodiment of home and safety in one's skin. This work has just barely begun and deepens each day as I expand my academic understanding of sacredness and my personal understanding of queerness. 

Higher education is an extreme privilege that my family and I cannot imagine to afford. Though financially education is an impossibility, I find value in that form of learning. The ability to absorb what is considered "higher" education and use it as a tool to form my own opinions, conclusions, and life views is such an honor.  As someone raised in cooperative housing and strong community spaces, sharing what I learn with my community is also a vital part of my future plans. I firmly believe that the sharing of knowledge is essential to the progression of our communities and world. The challenges I face in receiving an education are far too universal. Though I cannot send my community and loved ones to school, sharing my experience will be an effort to narrow that gap.
