Initial payment to help treat Kuzco

Donation protected

AFTER GOAL UPDATE: After discussing with several who have donated, haven't donated, and plan to donate  - we have opted to leave the campaign open until Kuzco has had his procedure. We never imagined we would hit our goal in one day and had initially planned to have Kuzco scheduled for sometime mid-late December if the campaign made half of what we asked for. We're now looking within the next 2-3 weeks. Leaving the campaign up for the time being allows us to continue to close the gap and potentially get him in sooner. His condition has rapidly escalated over the course of a month, so getting him as soon as possible with proper diagnosis and treatment would be huge for his well being. You've all shown us your love and that it is possible. We'll continue to do what's best for Kuzco. We won't be "moving the goal posts" and upping the goal - we made what we asked for. Anything additional helps us get him in there soon. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

And just because: "Oh, riight. The donation. The donation for Kuzco, the donation chosen especially to save Kuzco. Kuzco's donation." - Kronk, probably.
-------------------------------------

The above is Kuzco. Roughly two years old, border collie mix... We think. Energetic, friendly, and really loves dinner time.

My wife, Courtney, and I found Kuzco on the Raleigh SPCA website and just had to meet him. Look at that face, how can you not? Despite knowing he was a special needs dog based on his bio - we wanted to move forward. We figured we would get more information from the SPCA and decide if we could care for him or not.

After meeting Kuzco and learning that he was thought to have idiopathic epilepsy (epilepsy with no known cause) and had been with the SPCA for nearly six months without any applications - our hearts broke. He was friendly, kind, and immediately took to us as we did with him. After discussing if we could handle and care properly for a dog with epilepsy and deciding we could - we adopted Kuzco.

A seizure here and there, no big deal. He was adjusting well, getting along with his new brother Mickey, and integrating as a part of our family like we hoped he would.

Fast forward to mid-October: the frequency of the seizures continued to climb. From having one seizure a month to one every two weeks to once a week to once every three days. Our primary care vet agreed that this wasn't normal and we started the process to get him into a Neurologist. The earliest appointment available was December 2nd. We took it.  At this point, I want to make it exceedingly clear that the SPCA of Raleigh did everything they could for what they thought was the issue. There was no way for them to know it would progress like this as it seems to have kicked up/in perhaps not long before we adopted him.

Last night, 11/16, Kuzco had three seizures within a few hours of each other and we brought him into to an emergency neurology appointment. After an examination from various specialists the likely culprit is, in fact, not epilepsy at all, but most likely an "infectious brain disease" which will, likely, continue to get worse without proper diagnosis and treatment.

The estimated cost for this is anywhere between $3,000 and $6,000. A price we have no problem paying; however, it the initial procedures need to be paid for upfront.

In order to begin treatment, an MRI and a spinal tap is going to cost $3,000.

We are only looking for assistance with half of Kuzco's initial treatment, $1,500. The hardest part of this process is getting him in the door and started. We believe we will be able to care for Kuzco after the treatment plan is in place, but the cost to get to that point is incredibly high and upfront

Frankly, it's just not the sort of money we have saved, I don't know that we have the time to wait to save up for it given we have seen Kuzco's condition deteriorate over a relatively short period of time. If this campaign is able to reach $1,500, if it ever does, I'm sure we'll be able to save the remaining $1,500 along side of it.

Those of you who know us from Twitch or various gaming communities, know we hate taking money from people and actively encourage you to spend it on others instead of us. Those of you who don't know us or maybe found your way here through a share - just know this whole GoFundMe thing was the hardest thing I've ever had to share. But right now, I don't know what to do and I just want to make sure my dog gets better instead of worse. With that being said, whatever is donated here, once Kuzco is healed and better, Courtney and I will be paying it forward and making donations equal to the amount raised for a charity or charities that help those in need with vet bills.

Courtney, myself, Mickey, and Kuzco can't thank you enough if you choose to help, whether it is through a donation or simply spreading the word. We adopted Kuzco knowing he had special needs and we wanted to give him a better life and we will do anything it takes to make sure we can do so.
