Hello family and friends.
First, we would like to thank all of you for the outpouring of support and love. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Tori Ann, and I am Val’s granddaughter. As most of you know my grandfather has been battling cancer since March of 2020. He has gone through multiple rounds of radiation and chemotherapy over the last year and a half and has been fighting this with everything he’s got. Unfortunately, his doctors have determined that treatment is no longer helping and that the focus of care should be on keeping him comfortable. Last week we met with his hospice team and came up with an action plan to help keep him comfortable during the time he has left.
Over the past couple of weeks my grandpa has gotten weaker and weaker and is no longer able to provide much support for himself. At this time, we are looking to set up in home care for him on a regular basis so that he can get daily care as hospice only comes in every couple of days. As many of you know I no longer live in California and am not able to go back home to help take care of my grandpa. My mom, Vicki, lives with my grandpa and has been there to take care of what he needs as much as she can but is also working and can’t be home at all hours of the day. My Uncle and Aunt, Tony, and Carrie, are also helping as much as they can, but also have jobs and 2 kids to take care of at home. Our neighbors have also been very kind and have been checking in on him and bringing him meals when they can, but at this point he needs someone to help with his daily needs.
As I mentioned above, we are trying to get someone into the house to help take care of him while my mom, uncle, and aunt are at work. Unfortunately, his insurance does not cover this type of care and we will be finding someone on our own. This type of care is very costly and will be an added expense during what is already a very difficult time. We have had many of you reach out to us and ask when you can visit with him and how you can help during this time, well, we are setting this up so that those of you who would like to help can. My grandpa has spent most of his life serving his country and community. He served 20 plus years in the Coast Guard (active and reserve), 8 years on city council, and has been a part of many other community groups since moving to Long Beach. We thank you all again for the love and support and we will continue to update everyone as we can.
