Support Inga People & the Protection of Ancestral Territory

In the heart of the Colombian Amazon, the Inga people are defending their ancestral territory, which has sustained them for millennia. With little to no government support, and facing the growing threat of corporations appropriating their lands for destructive extractive projects, Taita Luciano Mutumbajoy, who lives in the territory of the Mutumbajoy Jansasoy Family, needs your help to ensure the survival of his people and their traditional ways of life.

For decades, the Inga people have been actively involved in opposing mining and other extractive projects that would ultimately destroy their ancestral lands. These Indigenous Land Guardians — led by Taita Luciano, a member of the Major Council of UMIYAC (Union of Yageceros Doctors of the Colombian Amazon) — are being prosecuted for defending their right to protect the flora and fauna that has made their way of life possible for centuries. Today, these activists are organizing and fighting for the recognition of their ancestral territory.

Although not part of the Collective Property concept, as a reservation, it has a millennia-old spiritual significance where these traditions have been passed down to dozens of people who are now Taitas trained as traditional and spiritual healers. As demonstrated in the studies of Michael Taussig — an anthropologist who conducted ground work between 1974 and 1989 with the families — the land holds crucial medicinal plants that are at the center of the spirituality taught by Grandfather Santiago Mutumbajoy and Ambrosia Jasasoy. This territory is therefore not only houses of memory of the Inga’s ancestors, but also carries the diversity of the flora and fauna that play an integral part within the people’s spiritual landscape.

Your generosity will directly support a team of three Inga people who will be carrying out this long legal journey. This team will conduct case studies for the Rutas del Sur project highway that connects Santana to Neiva, Huila, and passes through the ancestral farm of Taita Santiago Mutumbajoy and Mama Ambrosia Jansasoy, where their families currently live.

The work will involve conducting a study in social, ancestral, and cartographic terms, using documents with all the details of the environmental, cultural, and spiritual impact. They will also present the case to the necessary government environmental sources for its protection.

En el corazón de la Amazonía colombiana, el pueblo Inga defiende su territorio ancestral, que lo ha sustentado durante milenios. Con poco o ningún apoyo gubernamental, y ante la creciente amenaza de que las corporaciones se apropien de sus tierras para proyectos extractivos destructivos, Taita Luciano Mutumbajoy, quien vive en el territorio de la Familia Mutumbajoy Jansasoy, necesita tu ayuda para asegurar la supervivencia de su pueblo y sus formas de vida tradicionales.

Como lo demuestran los estudios de Michael Taussig, antropólogo que realizó trabajo de campo entre 1974 y 1989 con las familias, la tierra alberga plantas medicinales cruciales que son el centro de la espiritualidad enseñada por el Abuelo Santiago Mutumbajoy y Ambrosia Jasasoy. Por lo tanto, este territorio no solo alberga la memoria de los ancestros Ingas, sino que también alberga la diversidad de la flora y fauna que forma parte integral del paisaje espiritual del pueblo. Su generosidad apoyará directamente a un equipo de tres personas del pueblo Inga que llevarán a cabo este largo proceso legal. Este equipo realizará estudios de caso para la carretera del proyecto Rutas del Sur, que conecta Santana con Neiva, Huila, y pasa por la finca ancestral de Taita Santiago Mutumbajoy y Mama Ambrosia Jansasoy, donde residen actualmente sus familias.

El trabajo consistirá en realizar un estudio social, ancestral y cartográfico, utilizando documentos con todos los detalles del impacto ambiental, cultural y espiritual. También presentarán el caso ante las autoridades ambientales gubernamentales necesarias para su protección.
