Indy Needs Knee Surgery

Ever since Bobak rescued Indy as a puppy, she has had a slight limp in her back left leg that would appear on occasion.  According to the rescue shelter where Bobak adopted her, she very likely had been a “bait dog”. A bait dog, for those of you who don’t know, is a dog used in dog fights to get the fighting dogs riled up. When the shelter rescued her she had been found abandoned in a ditch under a bunch of brush and was covered in scars from head to tail. For many years she lived a calm and relaxing life in Texas with Bobak’s mom. This past year we were able to bring her to our home in California.  We like to call it “dog heaven” because it’s such a special place for dogs to live- it’s peaceful and free from the distractions of the city, we have trails just minutes away from our doorstep that we frequent most every day, and it’s always nice outside because it’s California! We all feel very lucky to be here, especially during this pandemic.

Indy has been here since last July and lives a much more active lifestyle than she did in Texas. Through training and lots of attention we have watched Indy blossom into her true self! She is sweet and goofy.  She loves to talk to us when she’s excited.  She loves to relax in the sun outside or chew on big sticks. She loves meeting new people and dogs. She has been our savior during this pandemic and also with the passing of our other dog, Percy. With the increase in activity came strain on what we now know is a cruciate ligament injury in her knee that she most likely sustained while she was a bait dog. Essentially, her ACL (in human terms), started to tear more. Unfortunately, she recently landed on it in a way that completely tore the ligament.  She currently only has use of three of her legs.

We have been to see a surgeon and understand that with surgery Indy’s knee will be back to around 95% functioning. Without surgery, scar tissue will appear and her life will slow down dramatically. Without surgery, it is also incredibly common for this to occur in the other knee because they overcompensate.  She is only six years old and has a lot of life in front of her- we want provide the best quality of life we can.  This surgery, however, costs over $6,000 and is impossible for us to pay out of pocket because we both lost work due to COVID. We understand that it has been an extremely challenging time for all of us and if you don’t have the means to assist us in this moment that is OK! Any little bit helps and is greatly appreciated.
