Indigenous Peoples Day Inaugural Celebration

Donation protected
On the evening 18 June, 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a resolution declaring the second week in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Week. Introduced to the state legislature by Representative Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi and Representative Leo Pacheco of San Antonio, the Indigenous Peoples’ Week concurrent resolution, HCR62, is the result of years of work and activism.
Championed by Leroy Pena of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas, penned by Indigenous Historian J. Albert Nungaray, and following in the spirit of American Indian Heritage Day in Texas, this is a step towards acknowledging some historic wrongs and moving forward. Part of an effort to serve our tribal brothers and sisters, this resolution comes after Tarrant and Dallas Counties, as well as the cities of Fort Worth and Dallas acknowledged similar proclamations and resolutions, and is part of a statewide effort to promote indigenous cultures and recognize the past, present, and future presence of Indigenous Peoples in Texas. The hard work of Samantha J Locke, Ohiyesá Locke, Stacy Maya Allison Moore, Angela Andrade, Ausben StrongHeart, Peggy Larney, Diana Parton Smith, Brian Larney, Jessica Johnson, and so many more will not be forgotten.
This is a victorious moment for the Indigenous community and the State of Texas, and we look forward to many more.
On October 9th 2021 we are planning the Inaugural Indigenous Peoples Day celebration at the State Capitol building in Austin Texas. Please donate what you can for this momentous occasion. It's time that the State of Texas honor its original inhabitants, as this state would not be in existence without their contributions.
