Indigenous Midwives Gathering

Donation protected
This GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for a Gathering of International Indigenous Midwives.  This Gathering will take place from June 23rd - 26th following the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Congress in Toronto, Canada from 18th - 23rd of June, 2017.

There will be Thousands of International Midwives attending ICM.  It is a very busy Congress with many exciting things happening including presentations, workshops, and meetings where decisions get made regarding Midwifery on an International level.  Because of the concentrated and busy schedule of ICM, the National Aboriginal Council of Midwives (NACM) together with the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) were unable to hold their annual conferences and gatherings, so myself (Rachel Dennis) and my mother (Carol Couchie, both members of NACM), have  decided to hold a separate gathering for International Indigenous Midwives.

We want to capitalize on this opportunity to meet while people are together and begin a process of creating a position statement regarding Indigenous Midwifery at the next ICM Congress in Indonesia in June 2020.

We are working very hard to sponcer as many midiwves as we can from low resource countries. Many Indigenous midwives from South & Central America, Australia, New Zealand & West Africa are already planning on attending. With your donated funds, along with additional fundraising efforts, we are looking to be able to extend their stay and meet just north of Toronto at a lodge just following the congress. Many of the Midwives coming from low resource countries would never be able to afford the accommodation and meal costs.

The gathering will be held at a Retriet near one of the entrances to Algonquin Park, giving us the opertunity to show off one of the beauties of Northern Ontario.  The funds raised will be withdrawn by myself and paid directly to the Retriet centre to pay towards the accomodation fees.  We have set the goal amount as to not go over what the Retriet fees will be.

Indigenous Midwifery has a critical role in working with some of the most disenfranchised women around the world, from all socioeconomic backgrounds. They care for these women during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives and are often instrumental in their well being and even their survival during the childbearing year.

Globally, Indigenous Midwives arekey to providing insight to culturally safe care, are experts in healing from the devastation of colonialism, and bear witness to the treatment and conditions of women, their newborns, and children on a tribal and community base level. Chi Meegwetch, Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity for this important work.
