Hi, my name is India Long and I’m a junior English Lit major at Biola University! Recently, I was accepted into the Torrey Cambridge study abroad program which is a 3-week summer program spent at Cambridge University reading classic literature and touring the sites of the city. During my time at Biola, I have been involved in programs such as LEAD, SGA, SEID, Torrey Honors College, and Housing and Residence Life. I have appreciated all the ways in which I’ve grown and developed as a person and leader during my time here and hope to continue to grow with this new opportunity. I knew when I first came to Biola and joined the Torrey Honors Program that I would want to be a part of Torrey Cambridge. As someone who has never been outside of country, I believe it would be an amazing experience to have the opportunity to travel with a group of students and to gain new insights and experiences that were not had by previous generations of my family. As a student who is financially supporting herself, I often rely on financial aid and the kindness of others to provide for the things I need, in addition to working 3 jobs with a full time course-load. Unfortunately, there is no financial aid offered for Torrey Cambridge to low-income students, meaning that a student can’t go even if they are accepted into the study abroad program if they don’t have the means to afford it. Because I was hoping that financial aid would help me cover the cost of this trip, I was devastated when I found out there wasn’t aid offered to students like myself or in situations similar to mine. But I don’t want to allow this to make me give up my dream of studying abroad now that I finally have the opportunity. My goal is to raise $5,300 to cover the cost of the trip along with food and travel expenses while I’m there by April 15th.
