Indian Canyon Elders' ADA Dwelling & Safety needs

At Indian Canyon Nation (ICN), we recognize the profound significance of caring for our elders, especially those who have dedicated their lives to the fight for Indigenous Rights. Native Americans have endured countless challenges, including not having the ability to practice their religion legally until 1978, despite the country's foundation on the principles of religious freedom, among many others, including countless treaties broken and/or never ratified by the federal and state governments. We believe it is our moral duty to support and uplift these extraordinary individuals who have faced such hardships.

ICN, also known as the Indian Canyon Mutsun Band of Costanoan-Ohlone People, situated in Hollister, California, stands as a sanctuary for ceremony, spiritual discovery, practice, nourishment, and expression for all people who would respectfully show up in commuinty, as well as a safe-haven for Indigenous, minority, at-risk youth, and LGBTQIA+ community members and allies. We hold the utmost respect for the wisdom and guidance our elders offer, and it is our responsibility to provide them with safe, accessible housing tailored to their unique needs.

This critical initiative aims to raise between $100,000.00 to $800,000.00, with the goal of securing funds for the construction and improvement of elder dwellings. The more money we raise, the higher the quality of homes we'll be able to purchase and complete for the elders, offering them a haven that meets their accessibility requirements and enhances their quality of life.

Our fundraising efforts directly benefit Ann-Marie Sayers, the esteemed CIR founder and ICN Tribal Chairwoman Emeritus. Ann-Marie's unwavering dedication to championing the rights of Indigenous peoples has left an indelible mark. As a disabled elder, she faces limited mobility and resides on the ground floor of an existing cabin, confined to the living room. The surrounding land remains inaccessible, hindering her connection with nature. By replacing the adjacent barn with a new dwelling, we can create a secure, accessible space where Ann-Marie can move freely and fully embrace the natural world. To provide optimal care for our elders, we also plan to construct a second floor or additional bedroom to house their caretakers, ensuring the necessary support and fostering an environment of compassion.

Furthermore, we strive to complete the construction of a dwelling for tribal elder Chris Sayers, brother of Ann-Marie. Presently, Chris resides in the living room of an incomplete and non-ADA compliant home that he shares with Ann-Marie. Urgent action is needed to address his dire need for suitable shelter. As a disabled elder, Chris requires an ADA-compliant dwelling that guarantees comfort and ease of living. Your generous contributions will enable us to fortify the foundation and finalize the construction of a single-floor home, specifically designed to accommodate Chris's unique needs, preserving his dignity and autonomy.

In addition to providing suitable dwellings, your donations will facilitate vital improvements such as gas and solar electric installations, septic assessments and enhancements, deck construction, and the installation of ramps and rails to ensure ADA compliance. These crucial enhancements will establish a secure and comfortable living environment for our elders, supporting their overall well-being.
