To my friends, family, and community members,
My name is India Anderson-Carter and I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is with big dreams and high hopes that I come asking for help from you all. I have entered the stage in my journey to medical school where I will be officially submitting my applications this June. As excited as that makes me, I am hindered and discouraged due to the financial burden that comes with applying. It is because of this financial burden that I am reaching out to any and everyone who is willing to help support me in my Goal to become a pediatrician. Becoming a doctor is the only plan that I have for myself post-graduation. It is what I have been placed on this Earth to do. I am no stranger to overcoming obstacles as I have accomplished a great deal despite having a number of health challenges myself. I know first-hand what it feels like to be ridiculed over being “sick.” I know what it looks like to see my parents stress over my health. I know what it looks like when a family cuts corners for medical expenses. But more importantly I understand the value of support systems that pushed me to believe “I can do and be anything I want.” I am a firm believer in “to whom much is given, much is required.”-Luke 12:48 I share that to say that I understand how much has been sacrificed on my behalf and that I hope to give back in the same ways, as a pediatrician.
My strides thus far have been very successful and I am forever grateful for what God continues to allow me to do. I am a full time student and most of the money I make go towards my bills and sustaining myself. This is where I need you all. If you want and can envision a world where medical professionals are here to not only help heal children, but encourage them that they can do anything, push them to pursue their dreams, and pay it forward, help me get to medical school. You all have already given me so much of your time, your love and your support and now I ask that you help me reach my goal of raising $5,000 to relieve the financial burden that is the application process.
This includes the price of the application ($130), the cost to apply to each school ($35/school), the cost to send secondary applications back to schools ($50-100/school), and money to travel to interviews. I will be applying to 15 schools. As a Black female graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and Spanish at a Big 10 University, a 3.6 GPA, and a resume that highlights my campus/community involvement as well as academic and professional accomplishments; I am confident that I am a great candidate for any prestigious medical school. Even if you are unable to support me financially, I ask that your keep me in your thoughts and prayers as you already have through my journey. In return you can be assured that I will carry the experience of people in our communities into the classroom and in every space I enter. You can also have peace of mind that you are investing in the future of someone whose impact will go beyond her professional identity. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
