Rescuing Girls from Sex Trafficking

In September I will be traveling to Kolkata, India.
I will be working with the organization New Light. Started by Urmi Basu 15 years ago, New Light is on the forefront of the Anti-Trafficking movement in India.
They are actively involved in both the Rescue and Rehabilitation of girls on the street in the red light district. The many facetted fronts they work on include: rescues and/or purchasing the girls back from the pimps, providing shelter and safe housing, treatment of their medical needs, counseling for trauma reduction, and education with life skills that prepare them for a new future.
I’m honored to be able to work alongside the Founder, Urmi Basu herself. Featured in the book and movie “Half the Sky” she has worked tirelessly at a grassroots level to save thousands of girls from sexual exploitation.
I’m volunteer my time to offer in-depth counseling to the victims. I will also be teaching workshops on reproductive health and menstruation. Additionally, I will be conducting training for the staff so that they might better serve the girl’s emotional needs. And I will be directly involved in some of the rescue efforts.
I would greatly appreciate your help in any way.
As always I need to cover airfare, housing, meals and transportation.
I am also doing a “Panty Drive” to gather underwear for the girls. Providing girls with the feminine items they need, helps them manage their monthly cycle so that they will be able to get back into school.
Lastly, I will be collecting money to “Buy Freedom”. A mere $200 rescues one girl from a lifetime of trauma working on the streets in the sex trade in India. I hope to raise enough money to rescue many girls during the time I am in Kolkata.
