India Covid-19 Financial Assistance Program
- Providing critical financial assistance to low-income families impacted by Covid-19 (in Bengaluru and other regions in India)
- In collaboration with Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar
India is currently experiencing a terrible 2nd wave of Covid-19. Whilst Covid-19 has ravaged communities in India across social strata, demographics and region, it is an unfortunate reality that poor and low-income families have been disproportionate impacted, in terms of shock disruption to incomes, high exposure to virus transmission, low access to adequate healthcare & medication, and fatalities of family members.
As in many developing nations, low-income families in India have faced the brunt of the economic impact from both the 1st and 2nd wave, with incomes for many low-income families particularly impacted due to the death or severe illness of a primary bread winner from Covid-19. Lack of adequate savings, reduced opportunity for short-term employment and absence of a meaningful government benefits program or other accessible forms of financial aid mean that low-income families are especially vulnerable right now, often unable to afford critical necessities. This includes access to housing, medicines, healthcare, food, clothing, being able to pay school fees etc.
Like many others within the Indian diaspora, I (as well as my family and some friends) want to help in any way possible. With vulnerable low-income families in mind, we have launched the India Covid-19 Financial Assistance Program, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar.
We seek to provide financial assistance to a specific demographic, being low-income families impacted by Covid-19. Our program reflects specific parameters:
Meaningful cause
· Specific target beneficiaries: Low-income families who have faced sudden and severe disruption to family income from death / illness of a family member due to Covid-19.
· Helping where it matters: we seek to provide assistance to approved families by paying for critical essentials like housing (e.g., rent), food, medicines, school fees etc. The emphasis is on directly paying towards the essentials, as opposed to giving cash. However, on a case by case basis, cash grants may be provided too.
· Equitable beneficiary outcomes: Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar will establish an internal committee to assess the needs of vulnerable families, and accordingly decide on the best way to provide meaningful assistance, within an envelope of INR 10,000-15,000 per family, with variations only by exception on case by case basis.
Total Transparency
· Zero leakage and direct beneficiary benefit: 100% of funds donated (less any fees charged by GoFundMe and international funds remittance fees) will be transferred to a registered Trust called “Rotary Jayanagar Trust’, operated by Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar. The club have committed to us that 100% of all funds received by them will be deployed directly as part of this program as a benefit to target beneficiaries. There are nil admin fees or intermediary payments involved.
· See where we are helping - As a partner in this program, Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar are focused on deploying assistance to only those families that are deemed to meet our stated criteria. The club will aim to provide periodic updates (that will be uploaded to the data-room) providing details of financial grants / assistance deployed, the background of beneficiaries etc.
Maximum community impact
· Credible disbursement of monies: we are collaborating with a respectable organisation like Rotary Club that has deep rooted community focused values and well established capability to identify target beneficiaries, assess their needs and disburse monies & benefits directly into communities in a responsible manner.
· Wider India coverage: upon reaching certain fund raising / disbursement milestones, we seek to replicate this model in collaboration with Rotary clubs in other locations (incl rural regions) in India.
Some housekeeping stuff…
· This program is entirely an initiative started by me (Sharat Chandra Kanthan) in collaboration with Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar, with nil personal financial incentive or gain. I reside in Sydney, Australia
· All funds being donated will go into my Australia domiciled bank account. In batches of A$500 or $1,000, I will transfer the funds to the bank account of Rotary Jayanagar Trust (operated by Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar)
· 100% of all funds donated (less any fees charged by GoFundMe and international funds remittance fees) will be deployed to Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar. For the purposes of this program, I consider Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar a suitable organization with which to collaborate, because A] Rotary Clubs worldwide (incl in India) have a track record over many decades, of being involved in some great philanthropic work directly within local communities ; B] Rotary Club of Bengaluru, Jayanagar have already mobilised resources and efforts towards providing Covid-19 relief within the community across 2020 and currently; C] The club have expressed genuine interest in collaborating within this proposed program and in benefitting the community as per desired parameters
