ALS Research - Inderjit’s Story

ALS is a deadly disease. With little known about it and no cure. It robs many of their lives after an excruciating existence.


In 2011, my loving father of 4 daughters, Inderjit Sidhu, received devastating news of his diagnosis of the life altering disease known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The insidious, incurable disease robbed my father of his ability to walk, swallow, breathe, eat and even talk; all while leaving his mind perfectly intact, vital, and stymied.


The first four years with the disease brought many trips to the hospital with numerous doctors to determine what exactly was wrong and how he could be cured. But during this time the disease progressed and got worse; spreading from his left arm to his legs, eventually taking over his body and later leaving him completely paralyzed. Watching him slowly deteriorate was the hardest thing for us to do. He fought with a passion to ensure he was there for his family but it wasn’t a fight he was meant to win.


Later in January of 2014, he was rushed to the ER where he was hooked up to breathing machine for the next four years of his life. He was able to make a few quick trips home to spend time with my mom and his other three daughters for a few hours a day, but when his body no longer allowed him to do so the hospital became his permanent home. Eventually he completely lost his ability to walk and eat on his own and was essentially bedridden.


Determined to fight ALS with everything he had, his battle ended on May 6, 2018 at the young age of 50, with his birthday only two weeks away. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis took my dad away from us.


Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment or cure for this debilitating disease, as it continues to takes many lives of those affected.


As an individual impacted by this terrible disease, I am creating this fundraiser in honour of the strongest, most selfless person that I am lucky to call my Dad. He suffered 7 long years and I pray no one and their families have to go through what my family and I have had to endure.


I am participating in the WALK for ALS this year, joining a passionate community to challenge this devastating disease. All the proceeds collected will be donated to support the WALK for ALS to help create a better reality for people and families living with ALS by enabling access to support services and equipment.
