Between 3rd and 5th July 1970, four unarmed civilians — Charles O'Neill, William Burns, Zbigniew Uglik, and Patrick Elliman — lost their lives at the hands of British troops on the Falls Road in West Belfast.
During this period, the area was subjected to an unlawful, military-imposed curfew. For three days, a significant portion of the Falls Road community was placed under siege. Residents were confined to their homes, while extensive military raids caused considerable destruction to property throughout the neighbourhood.
Among those killed were two elderly residents and a London-based Polish photojournalist, all fatally shot. A fourth individual died after being struck by a British Army vehicle. Over the course of the curfew, several hundred people sustained injuries or were detained.
These events marked a turning point in the relationship between the local community and British military forces, as already fragile trust was irrevocably damaged.
More than five decades later, the families of those who died continue to seek answers and accountability for the loss of their loved ones. In pursuit of truth and justice, we are working to establish an Independent Panel of Inquiry, to be chaired by Michael Mansfield KC, a distinguished barrister known for his commitment to human rights and social justice.
To achieve this, we are appealing for financial support. All funds raised will be used exclusively to cover the administrative expenses associated with forming the Independent Panel of Inquiry and the publication of its findings.
Your support will help bring long-overdue clarity, recognition, and justice to the victims and their families.
