Independence for Shawn Harrington

Shawn Harrington’s story of heroism has been told in major media outlets, the documentary film “Chi Town,” and the acclaimed book, “All the Dreams We’ve Dreamed.”

In 2014, while driving his daughter to school one morning, Shawn barely survived a mistaken-identity shooting. In an act of astonishing courage—and parental love— he dove on top of his daughter an instant before a bullet pierced her headrest. Tragically, in the ensuing gunfire Shawn was paralyzed, and he is now confined to a wheelchair. Since saving his daughter’s life, he has spent too many days stuck in his aunt’s 800-square-foot apartment, which is not ADA accessible. In today’s world, we all know what “sheltering in place” is like. For Shawn, this has been an ongoing issue for six years.

A community icon and youth basketball coach, Shawn finally has an opportunity to become independent. Our down payment has secured the condo. Our next hurdle is to make the place totally wheelchair accessible. By helping him pay for this modest condo, we will help him become totally independent, move forward in his life—and continue to help the youth of Chicago through basketball. His injury makes it impossible for him to work more than part time, and we now need funds to make the condo both accessible and sustainable. This former All-American player, coach, and educator at Marshall High School has always given back to his West Side community. We are seeking your help in the next phase of moving forward with Shawn’s independence.
