Fire leaves 2 fighting for their lives

KCTV5 News Around 8 am on April 23, tragedy struck two families in the 900 block of South Mills Street. At the scene, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the front door. Crews were able to extinguish the fire by 9 a.m. At this point, it is believed the fire was started from a tablet and charger, which overheated in the room the children were sleeping.

 

11 people were in the home. 3 adults and 8 juveniles. Four people were injured, 2 of which are still in critical condition. One of the minors, an 11 year old boy, saw the fire and alerted his parents. His father, Curtis Jewett, sprang into action and rescued the younger children from a mattress that was engulfed in flames. He was transported to an area hospital with burns to his hands, feet and face. He is now intubated with lung damage from smoke inhalation. He rescued a 2 year old girl, who was unconscious from carbon dioxide poisoning. He also rescued several other minors. Two of which are still hospitalized with severe burns covering 20% and 80% of their bodies.

 

The home of Kristina Sandstoe has been closed by the city, she is currently staying at the hospital with her daughter, the 2 year old girl. The other minors fighting for their lives are children of Stormy Farmer. Stormy and her children were staying the night with Kristina and her family the morning of the fire.
