As a climber of over 5 years,it is hard to overstate what this has done for my physical and mental health. Great friendships, exciting travel, beautiful locations. In some ways our sport is very inclusive of different types of people. Generally, men and women are able to climb at the same level. Our playground is great outdoors, which costs nothing to access. There is a perfect climbing route for everyone of all abilities, even more so when considering indoor climbing.
However, in some ways our sport is not inclusive: it can be expensive, can be highly middle class and not reflect some communities and types of people. There can also be other barriers to entry for people with physical or mental disabilities. So I have decided to do my bit for climbing (which has given me so much) to give back! At midday on the 2nd of April I will be starting the West Highland Way to raise money for charities and community interest organisations supporting inclusive climbing. I have chosen three organizations to support who are doing great work:
United we Climb
United We Climb is a grassroots initiative focused on increasing diversity and representation within the UK climbing community. They work to break down social and cultural barriers by creating safe, welcoming spaces and opportunities for people from underrepresented backgrounds to get involved in climbing.
Climb CIO
Climb CIO (Climb Community Interest Organisation) is dedicated to making climbing accessible to all. They support individuals who face financial, social, or physical barriers by providing subsidised sessions, training, and inclusive climbing programmes designed to build confidence, skills, and community.
Black Dog Outdoors
Black Dog Outdoors uses climbing and outdoor activities to support people living with mental health challenges. Their programmes focus on improving wellbeing, reducing isolation, and building resilience through connection with nature and supportive group experiences.
Please follow, like, share, comment, etc. And consider supporting the project financially if you can.
