Inches for Intensives - 13k by July 13th for M&M

Since we first shared Mack and Mila’s story, we’ve learned they both have a rare neuromuscular and metabolic condition that makes everyday movement really hard. The things that come naturally to most kids take real effort for them. But these two show up and fight for every bit of progress. We’ve been working with UCSF and they recommend  doing frequent intensive therapies (think several week long baby boot camps). We recently completed our first, and it’s been a game-changer. It’s expensive, out of pocket, and we have to travel for it, but it’s helping. We’re watching them get stronger, more determined, and more connected every day. Inchstone by inchstone, they’re getting there!!! And we’re so grateful to have people showing up for them right alongside us.

Mack and Mila were born in March, but from the very start, their journey has been filled with challenges. They spent the first few months of their lives fighting to be healthy in the NICU, where they were constantly monitored as they struggled to breathe and eat on their own. Both babies faced significant obstacles, and each day was a fight for survival. With a total of 5 surgeries, at-home medical equipment, and endless specialist visits, the expenses have been overbearing. Alyssa and Tony have never left their sides, advocating for their care and ensuring they received the best treatments possible. This family has been through more than anyone should ever have to endure, and it’s time we all rally around them in their time of need.

Mack, in particular, faced additional struggles. He had trouble with feeding, which led to him needing a feeding tube. He also developed oral aversion, making it difficult for him to even attempt to eat or drink. For a while, Mack’s main focus was simply learning to breathe on his own and gradually building the strength to do everyday tasks like eating. This process has been slow and challenging, but he has made progress with the love and care of his amazing parents.

Mila has also had her share of challenges and has struggled with severe reflux and trouble breathing on her own. Both babies have had to work so hard just to reach the milestones that many of us take for granted. The medication needed for both babies is currently not covered by insurance due to being a compound drug. The medication is totaling over $1,000 a month for the foreseeable future. The road ahead for both of them remains long, with ongoing therapies, medical appointments, and continued care needed as they grow.

After everything they’ve been through, Alyssa made the incredibly tough decision to leave her job as a kindergarten teacher to stay home with Mack and Mila. The babies are simply too medically complex to attend daycare, and Alyssa’s presence at home is crucial to their well-being. But with only one income coming in and so many medical expenses piling up, it’s been a financial struggle for their family. Alyssa and Tony are doing everything they can, but the burden is overwhelming.

As you can imagine, the costs of ongoing therapies, monthly medications, medical supplies, and the basic needs of two very sick babies have quickly added up. And while they’ve done everything in their power to make sure Mack and Mila get the care they deserve, the financial strain has become too much to bear alone.

Alyssa and Tony are two of the most generous and selfless people you’ll ever meet. They’ve poured every ounce of love into their children and have never once wavered in their commitment to their babies. But right now, they need our help. They’ve given so much to others, and now it’s time for us to give back.
