My name is Rachael, and I am a chemistry Ph.D. student in CA and the founder of the Incarcerated Youth Education Program (IYEP). We, at this program, feel strongly that many aspects of our current education system can be transformed to create a more accessible and impactful experience for young students. One way in which this can begin is with incarcerated or at-risk youth. We believe that the very root of effective education is treating young students with respect and understanding that it takes time, love, and patience to grow. We often remain ignorant to the fact that it is the lack of educational opportunity both in and out of juvenile detention that contributes to the cause and sustainment of youth incarceration.
IYEP is a team of nearly 50 extremely passionate and hardworking graduate students (across all academic fields) dedicated to serving a community of young incarcerated individuals with supplemental education and mentorship. We offer tutoring, workshops, and mentorship in all subject matters (mathematics, writing, reading, vocabulary, study skills, notetaking, critical thinking, problem-solving, etc.). These courses are designed to help these students envision themselves as the successful adults they can be. The mission of this program is to encourage students to set goals for a future after incarceration, rehab, or probation.
BUT!!! We need your help! We are asking for donations to help with the costs of:
- The transportation of our team members to (and from) the juvenile hall
- The materials needed for the students (supplemental materials such as books, journals, etc.)
- The application processing fees for each team member to become onboarded and cleared to work in the detention center.
We, at IYEP, appreciate you taking the time to read this and look forward to serving this community with the help of your donations!
Thank you,
Rachael R.
