On February 17th, the Saturday Free School for Philosophy and Black Liberation in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Education, Philosophy, and Religion Department launches the Year of James Baldwin: God's Revolutionary Voice. We inaugurate a year-long celebration in Philadelphia of the 100th birth anniversary of American essayist, novelist, playwright, poet, and activist James Arthur Baldwin (August 2, 1924 - December 1, 1987). Through citywide reading groups at community centers, churches, high schools, universities, and libraries; year-long events and film screenings; and a podcast, the Year of James Baldwin will celebrate the relevance of Baldwin’s life and ideas for a new America that we must achieve.
The inaugural event will feature speakers, documentary footage, and intercivilizational cultural performances. It will be held at Parkway Central Library, Skyline Room (4th Floor) between 11am and 5pm. Find more information at yearofjamesbaldwin.org or https://www.facebook.com/TheSaturdayFreeSchool. Help us bring this event free to the public. Funds will go towards refreshments, promotional material, performers, and copies of Avant-Garde: A Journal of Peace, Democracy, and Science Issue 1. You can also contribute via Venmo (@aliceyx71) or Cash App ($aliceyx71).
