Shannon Byrne was diagnosed with Stage 3C Ovarian cancer during the height of the Pandemic and underwent surgery, multiple rounds of chemotherapy, then 2 years impacted body and spirit by a maintenance drug. The hope was that those measures would see the end of this awful journey. Thankfully she is now in remission and beginning to look forward to regaining her life and strength. Her attitude and outlook are an inspiration for all of us who are blessed with knowing her, and we love seeing her growing stronger.
However, the genetic abnormality that was found during her treatments comes with an extremely high risk of breast cancer. She has, unfortunately, had several irregular scans and tests. The treatments that have been offered come with severe side effects that would diminish her quality of life with no guarantees of success. Therefore, she had to make the tough decision to have preventative surgery. The surgery was May 30th and all is looking good so far!
Recovery is going to require months of physical therapy and treatment. Between medical bills, inability to work during recovery, and household needs, Shannon's financial plight is dire. She is lovingly supported by her partner, an elementary school teacher. Their budget was already very tight and even with multiple jobs, the loss of one income is incredibly stressful.
We all hope and pray for a successful recovery. Several of us remember Shannon’s reluctance to accept financial help at the beginning of her diagnosis. Like so many of us who give what we can when we see a need, it took a while for Shannon to see that there is also grace in receiving.
Many people, as well as her employer, have come forward to support Shannon’s financial struggles during her illness, and now we need your help. Please join us by contributing to the care and well-being of our loved friend during this next phase of her recovery.
In gratitude, Friends and Family of Shannon Byrne and Deidre Barrett
