In Support of Sasha's Cancer

Donation protected
My name is Sofya and I am a mom facing a challenging situation: My two-year-old daughter Sasha was diagnosed in the last year with high-risk, stage 4 neuroblastoma. This is a type of cancer typically affecting children under age 5 that develops on immature nerve cells in different parts of the body. You can learn more about neuroblastoma at https://www.cancer.org/cancer/neuroblastoma.html and https://beatnb.org.

“Nb kids,” as they are called, each experience different cancer journeys, some of which can play out over decades. Sasha has been in treatment for nine months now, which has seen her through about half of her initial round of treatments. This has included six rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, two bone marrow transplants, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy.

During and after Sasha’s treatment, she will be prone to infections, viruses, and side effects affecting major organs and bodily systems. This is especially worrisome for us amid the global coronavirus pandemic, which now puts her at an even greater risk on top of the existing risk of cancer and chemotherapy to her small body. If all goes well and she makes it through her initial treatments, they will be followed by a long maintenance period that includes multiple scans, routine appointments, and check-ups.

Needless to say, this has been an incredibly trying time for our family of five (which includes Sasha’s two siblings). My husband and I are optimistic that we will be able to get through our daughter’s initial treatments financially. But the more we learn about the disease, the more we realize it can be a very long journey, as treatment for this specific type of cancer can bring many complications for a growing child that require ongoing care. We are just getting started, and bills for cancer treatments grow quickly. The short- and long-term medical costs will likely surpass $250K.

Due to the nature of the disease and the treatment, I had to step down from running my business to provide daily care for Sasha. My husband continues to work and takes care of the other two children.

We are responsible, diligent, self-reliant people. We take our health very seriously and never would have predicted cancer as a possibility for any one of our children. This is the first time in my life when I have needed support and it is hard for me to ask for help. But I feel any caring and loving parent in my situation would go out of their comfort zone and ask for support if it increased the chances of a child’s survival.

If you feel passionately about pediatric cancer and are compelled to donate to help us care for Sasha, I ask that you consider a donation of any size to our cause. All money raised will cover the cost of Sasha’s medical expenses.

If you are unable to donate but still want to help, I ask that you consider sharing our story on your Facebook, Instagram, and other social media pages. By sharing the link to this page, you increase the chances of us reaching our goal.

Also, if you know a business that would like to help by donating to our cause, we are happy to give a public shout out on our fundraising campaign and social media pages to thank them for their support. We are not a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, but we can offer public exposure to any businesses that show their compassion and community focus by supporting our campaign.

Thank you for reading our story. With your help, we can provide little Sasha with the care she needs to pull through and thrive. On behalf of our family, I thank you for any support you can offer.
