A couple days prior to New Year's my cousin Mike took a blow to the head while getting firewood during a trip back east to visit his wife's family over the holidays. After a long flight home and a few days in bed he went to Surrey Memorial where they did a CT scan and confirmed a severe concussion. He was sent home instructed to rest. After a few days he started to feel a lot worse with additional side effects and concerns of a possible throat infection. His wife called an ambulance January 6th at which time he was taken to Langley Memorial. His lungs were failing and due to that he was at serious risk of a heart attack. Within hours they had him in the ICU and at 11:30pm they made the decision to intubate him and put him into an induced coma while they arranged transport to Royal Columbian Hospital. It was in the days to come they confirmed he was fighting Influenza A along with a pneumonia bacteria on top of which his liver and kidneys were struggling and his muscle mass was deteriorating. After numerous rounds of dialysis, a countless number of tests including a spinal tap and a week of marinating in paralysing coma inducing meds and cocktails of antibiotics they felt ready to start bringing him out of the coma. On Friday January 18th, after nearly 2 weeks he whispered "I love you too” to his wife. He has a very long road to recovery both in and out of the hospital as he needs extensive rehab and physical therapy to regain his strength. At this point no one is sure what the future may hold as his family's number one priority and focus for now is just getting him home back to his girls where he belongs. It was not until after he woke that his family was informed that doctors predict he only had a couple hours left at home had they not have called the ambulance when they did and even after being sent to Royal Columbian his odds of survival were 50/50 at best.
