In Memory of Vitomir Karanovic

Two years ago, Vitomir was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, or “pre-leukemia”, which prevents bone marrow from creating healthy blood cells. Vito was a man who never gave up - whether that meant uprooting his life to move to a new country or climbing the Two Lions during chemotherapy. Cancer was no exception to his perseverance.




Facing this news with courage, Vito promised his family, friends and colleagues that he would be return from this battle stronger than ever and in no time. In 2017, he undertook preconditioning chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, the option that could offer his health the most longevity. However, even with a perfect stem cell match, Vito’s new immune system aggressively rejected and attacked his body. This caused months of immunal suppressive therapy which left him vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. In early April, pneumonia and lymphoma compromised Vito’s vitals and removed the possibility of recovery. Even in these trying moments, he fought to express humor and joy to each of his many visitors. He passed away on April 15, 2018 with his family by his side. Vito will be remembered as a husband, father, brother, friend, and colleague with strength and perseverance that left us in awe.





Throughout his life, Vito was a pillar of courage and resilience for his children, students and colleagues. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Vito will always remember his kindness and generosity.




Vito leaves behind a beautiful family whom he loved until his last breath: Drazenka, his wife and three children, Stefan, Katarina and Aleksandar (who is 16 years old).
