In memory of Toby, keeping the dream going

When I moved into SOMA about a year ago, I found a fantastic gem, The Velvet Raven , a chocolate and wine bar on South Park. It feels special in an area filled with sterile and corporate venues catering to the ballpark crowd. And that's not a coincidence. You see, the Velvet Raven is born from love. Founded by two men, Toby and Basel, who are partners in love and business, they poured their hearts, passion, and money into making something special. As a queer man, I appreciate spaces where I feel safe and welcome. And at the Velvet Raven, everyone is welcome.
Recently, Toby passed away, succumbing quickly to cancer. It all happened fast and with little warning. Since this shop has been their life and passion for the past 3 years (most of that time during the pandemic), it's thrown things into turmoil. They've managed through so many twists and turns as they try to build a small business (and it's not easy in San Francisco in non-pandemic times!). This latest twist hurts. Hurts most of all Basel who is left missing his partner in love and business, while trying to keep the lights on, the chocolate orders complete, and making ends meet.
This fundraiser is to give a man space and time to grieve and to take care of himself. The goal is to cover at least a month of rent for the Velvet Raven so Basel can take the time he needs. Close the shop doors without worrying about money at least for a little. Even more would go a long way.
Losing someone is never easy. Toby's heart is as much in the shop as is Basel's and I believe that Toby's presence is still felt there. If you have time to visit, take a look at the art on the walls. Those are Toby's.
Money won't take away the grief, but I hope it will help give space for grieving. Let's support Basel and the Velvet Raven and keep the dream going.
