Our family is heartbroken by the sudden and tragic loss of Thomas Malone.
Thomas was so many things to so many people. He was a father, a son, a brother, a grandson, a partner, a friend, a teammate, a mentor, and a protector. He was deeply loved, and if you knew Thomas, chances are you have a story about him.
Maybe he made you laugh. Maybe he showed up for you when you needed someone. Maybe you played sports with him, worked alongside him, grew up with him, or watched him become the father and man he was.
Thomas was born and raised on the Windward side of Oʻahu, with roots in Kailua, Waimānalo, and Kāneʻohe. He had a big personality, a strong presence, and a sense of humor that could fill a room. His family remembers him as someone who loved hard, protected the people he cared about, and would be the first person running toward someone who needed help. His dad, Michael, described him as having the heart of a lion.
And more than anything, Thomas loved his family.
He will be missed by his father, Michael; his mother Brandie; his step-mother, Jolynn; his step-father, Mark; his sisters, Tatum and Nani; his brothers, Michael and Cade; and his grandmother, Nan.
He leaves behind his daughter, Alia Mailani, his sons Saint Thomas and Mateus, and his girlfriend Skye, who is expecting. His family was growing, and he was preparing to welcome another baby into this world.
That is one of the hardest parts of this loss.
There are children who now have to grow up without their dad. There is a baby who will know their father through photos, videos, stories, and the people who loved him. There is a family trying to understand how someone who was such a huge part of their lives is suddenly gone.
Thomas was only 30 years old.
He had already lived a life full of accomplishments and memories. At Kaiser High School, Thomas excelled in football, track, and soccer, becoming a state champion in all three sports in the same year. He went on to play football at City College of San Francisco, where he also earned his Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts.
He later built a career in Hawaiʻi's film industry as a member of IATSE Local 665, working as a Head and Lead Greensman. He worked hard, took pride in what he did, and continued building a life for himself and his family.
But when we talk about Thomas, we do not want his accomplishments to be the only things you remember. And we do not want the way he died to be what defines him. Thomas was more than the tragedy that took him from us.
He was the person people called when they needed help. He was someone younger boys in his neighborhood looked up to. He was a father figure. He was the friend who made you laugh. He was the brother who would stand beside you. He was the son his parents loved beyond words. He was a father who still had so much life left to live with his children.
Since Thomas passed, friends, family, teammates, coworkers, and people from throughout the community have shown how deeply he was loved. Flowers, photographs, handwritten notes, and memories have filled the place where people have gathered to honor him.
Every story shared reminds us that Thomas left a piece of himself with so many people. We are asking for help during a time our family never imagined we would face.
This GoFundMe has been created to help cover Thomas's funeral and memorial expenses and to help support his children during the difficult road ahead.
If Thomas ever made you laugh, helped you through something, stood up for you, played beside you, worked with you, or simply left a mark on your life, we ask that you consider helping his family now.
Any donation, no matter the amount, means more than we can put into words.
And if you are not able to donate, please consider sharing this page. Share Thomas's story. Share a memory. Share a photo. Say his name. Help us make sure his children grow up knowing exactly who their father was and how many people loved him.
To everyone who has already shown up for Thomas and our family, thank you.
Thank you for the flowers.
Thank you for the prayers.
Thank you for the messages.
Thank you for the memories.
Thank you for standing beside his family during one of the hardest moments of their lives.
Thomas was a father.
A son.
A brother.
A grandson.
A partner.
A friend.
A protector.
He was loved more than words can explain, and his absence will be felt for the rest of our lives.
His story does not end with how we lost him.
It continues through his children, through his family, through his friends, and through every person who carries a memory of Thomas with them.
We love you, Thomas.
You will never be forgotten.
