Sometimes life is not fair. This is evident by the tragic loss of our dear friend, Tom Knoebel. Tom died unexpectedly from complications of a massive heart attack on Monday, June 3rd, in Durham, North Carolina at the age of 56.
Tom leaves behind his wife Sheila, who was his high school sweet heart. They have stood by each other’s sides and supported one another through many phases of life for over 40 years. .
Tom’s quiet demeanor and fierce intelligence live on in his daughter Shannon, age 20, who just completed her sophomore year at Northern Illinois University. Shannon’s goal is to become a nationally certified speech and language pathologist. In order to achieve this goal and start on her career path, Shannon will need to complete her Bachelor’s Degree at NIU and then a Master’s Degree in SLP as well.
Besides being a hard worker and loyal friend to all, Tom was a football standout at both St. Rita High School (class of 1981) and the University of Michigan. He is survived by his older daughter Megan (Scott) Mitchell and grandchildren Gabriel, Sawyer, and Charlotte, his parents, John and Marguerite Knoebel Sr., his brothers John Jr. (Nancy) and Michael (Michelle) Knoebel, his in-laws, William and Vivian Baker,
Bill (Lori) Baker, Vincent (Rosanna) Baker and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Knoebel and Patricia (Daniel) Philipp.
We want to collect enough money to pay for Tom’s end of life expenses and assist the family with any remaining medical bills.
It is our hope that we can also help to pay for Sheila and Shannon’s living costs in the months ahead: college tuition and fees, a mortgage and utilities, groceries and all the other incidentals that Sheila must now cover alone.
Let’s make sure this family’s journey through grief is not impacted by financial strain. Tom was an amazing person, a great husband and father. Let’s surround his family with the abundance of love and care that they will be missing with his loss.
A funeral mass is being held for Tom on Saturday, July 20, at 9:30 am at the St. Rita High School Chapel, 7740 S. Western Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. A celebration of Tom's life and luncheon are being held at the Evergreen American Legion Hall Post 854, 9701 S. Kedzie, Evergreen Park, Illinois, from 11:30 am - 4:00 pm. All are welcome to attend.
