In Memory of SMU Doctoral Student Joel Owani

Joel Owani, a SMU PhD student, passed away unexpectedly, mere months away from completing his Doctoral Degree in Global Development Studies at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This is a tragic loss to his friends, colleagues and family.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy and their five daughters (ages 14, 13, 10, 8 and 2).

Joel was committed to helping his community in Uganda and was a devoted family man, encouraging his daughters to aspire to the highest levels of education.

I am Dr. Cathy Conrad, Joel’s supervisor.

I am raising the funds that Nancy will need to ensure that all five girls are able to attend school for the coming academic year (2025-26). Nancy has calculated the amount that will be required, which converted into Canadian dollars is equivalent to $11k. I hope you will make any donation that you can to ensure that his girls achieve their highest goals and aspirations in life.

Joel, in my last email I said "You are on the right path". I promise you that I will walk with your girls on their educational journeys with them.
