We’re heartbroken to share that Santiago López Alvarez, our dear friend and colleague, has passed away. Santi was part of the Rice University and the Fulbright community, where he completed his Ph.D. in Political Science. He was someone who truly lived life to the fullest, always curious, always kind, and always ready for the next adventure.

Santi loved to travel and explore the world. He had a big heart, full of generosity and warmth, and made everyone around him feel at ease. He had a way of bringing light wherever he went.

We’re organizing this fundraiser to honor his life and memory by contributing with a donation to a foundation his parents have to support and assist vulnerable populations in Colombia. His family has asked that, instead of flowers, we can contribute to this cause. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will go directly to his loved ones as they honor his memory.

- The funeral will be held this Thursday, October 9th, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.
