Why I'm fundraising
On Thanksgiving 11/24 we took our brother Robbie to the ER. We learnt that night that he had cancer and a tumor that needed to be removed quickly. We were able to get him a surgery date within a week and a plan of attack to start chemo and get him on the road to be cleared of cancer. 6 days later however, we had the paramedics pick him up as something was seriously wrong. The next day we learnt he also had a mass growing behind his abdomen ( that was being further checked on because we didn’t know how big it was) but this mass was growing in incredibly fast rate, and it had prutruded into his bowels/intestine and because of the location cat scans and MRI we unable to to give us any information of where or how much it was protruding. Robbie instantly became septic. Within hours we were notified that because he had an infection there was nothing they could do about the mass, until the infection went away. We were also notified that because of where the mass was affecting it was in an area they could not see which was causing him to be septic and would not be able to fix. With everything being a catch 22 it also meant there was nothing they could do for him. For the next 8 days Robbie fought as hard as he could. As silly as it may sounds, he gave the cancerous mass a run for its money as he was young and his body was truly healthy. In those 8 days our family got to see Robbie in a whole new light. As someone who was scared to do anything new , we got to see him become the bravest we had ever seen him. As someone who was always being taken care of, we saw him take care of us as he made sure to let us know he loved us, comforted the kids as they saw him in pain. As someone who was timid he showed us how strong he really could be. This situation was a horrifying tragedy, and became even worse as our family was forced to make some very difficult decision on his behalf. In those 8 days that he fought, We spent as much time with him as we could, trying to comfort him, hold his hand, crying over him, pleading with God, for 8 days, to make the outcome different. We spent those days in complete state of confusion as the Robbie that we would talk to was, without a doubt our Robbie: Facial expression, stubbornness, personality was all there but the very thing we couldn’t see, was the thing inside him killing him and it was taking over. In those 8 days we saw and felt the love our family truly has for him and felt the pain and heartbreak of knowing we were going to lose the person we care so much for. Robbie passed away on 12/8 and, as strong as we are, are absolutely shattered, and broken. We witnessed our mother losing her son in her arms, we walked through siblings losing their brother, nieces and nephews expecting death of an uncle. There was a lot more that happened that isn’t written in this post, but we want thank those who knew, reached out trying help, comfort us, ask what they could do while we were in the midst of it…..we can’t express how much that means to us. We continue to ask for prayers for our family as each new day since means, a new day of unraveling those 8 days and processing through everything that really happened and then trying to figure out how to move forward in celebrating Robbie’s life and continue to love the man he is.
