On a crisp autumn afternoon —Sunday, October 5 —in Sartell, Minnesota, 12-year-old Raghav Shrestha set out on his bike, doing what so many kids love—riding down Muskie Hill with joy and freedom. But in a tragic turn, Raghav’s ride ended in a devastating crash that left him critically injured. Though he wore a helmet and was surrounded by friends, the accident was severe. A nearby Samaritan, Gary Wassen, a CPR instructor, rushed to help and performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.
Raghav was transported to HCMC in Minneapolis, where he was placed on life support. For two days, his family, friends, and community held onto hope. But on Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by love, Raghav’s family made the heartbreaking decision to let him go. His medical team had found no brain activity, and he passed peacefully moments after being removed from life support.
Raghav was a seventh grader at Sartell-St. Stephen Middle School—a cheerful, fun-loving boy with a bright future. One of his greatest aspirations was to become a police officer. In a deeply moving moment on October 9 at HCMC, surrounded by his grieving family and local officers, Raghav was sworn in as an honorary officer—his dream fulfilled with love and honor. His parents shared that they are proud to have raised a son who was “always courageous in his words and actions.”
The Association of Nepalis in Minnesota (ANMN), representing the Nepali community across the state, shares in the profound grief of the Shrestha family as we mourn the tragic loss of young Raghav—a bright soul whose life was cut short far too soon. While no words can ease the pain of this irreparable loss, we stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and extend our deepest compassion and support.
To honor Raghav’s memory and assist his family during this unimaginable time, ANMN is organizing a fundraiser. Your generous contribution will help cover medical and memorial expenses, and serve as a powerful reminder that the community stands beside the Shrestha family in love and unity.
Let us come together to celebrate Raghav’s life, his dreams, and the joy he brought to those around him. Every donation is a step toward healing, remembrance, and hope.
