In Memory of Rachel Vasquez

Rachel had plans, big plans. She was a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, friend, but most importantly she was a mother to her amazing, 4 year old son, Leighton. Rachel tragically and unexpectedly passed away on January 21, 2021, at the young age of 27. Rachel could light up any room as soon as you heard her laugh. She was the friend and person who cared for others before herself. Rachel provided therapy to inmates at Dixon Correctional Center, a job most people would shy away from, but just one of her passions was prison reform.
I met Rachel in college through our sorority, Pi Beta Phi, and it was the best four years of my life with her by my side. While we tackled the real world after college even though I was living in Chicago and Rachel was living in Hampshire, we never lost touch. Rachel was the person I could always count on and I hope she knew I was that person for her. We had each other to guide us through the good and some of the toughest of life’s moments. Rachel is an extremely great loss to her family, her son, friends, and so many others who had the chance to meet her. I know she has touched so many people’s lives and made their life better (especially if they heard that laugh)!
Rachel once posted for my birthday, “I cannot wait to annoy you and laugh with you and cry with you for the rest of our lives. I cannot wait to be drinking martinis with you after long workdays when we’re 35 and sleeping in rocking chairs trying to keep each other awake when we’re 97”. I am deeply saddened to know Rachel and I will never be able to share these moments together, but I am HEARTBROKEN that her son will have to live a life without his mother who loved him more than anything. Leighton was Rachel’s entire world. Rachel was a ROCKSTAR mom, everything she did and accomplished was to make Leighton proud. I vow to never let Leighton forget how amazing his mom was.
I am creating this Go Fund Me page to assist Mr. and Mrs. Vasquez with visitation costs and all additional funds will be managed by Mr. and Mrs. Vasquez for their grandchild, Leighton. If you are able to donate to help her family and son, please do! In these unprecedented times if you are unable donate, please share this page far and wide. Rachel deserved the world and I want the world to remember her. Thank you so much in advance. I am so grateful.
With love,
Aubrey
