On March 23rd, 2026, the martial arts community lost a true legend of Texas BJJ. Professor William Vandry was a 6th degree Black Belt, founder of Vandry BJJ in Austin, TX, and a true innovator in the leg lock game. He was one of Master Carlos Machado's first black belts in Texas and he helped spread the art of Jiu Jitsu in central Texas. He suffered a sudden medical emergency and despite the heroic efforts of EMS, he could not be revived. He passed surrounded by love, with his wife Chandra by his side.
William dedicated his life to helping others. He spent countless hours on the mats teaching, mentoring, and innovating. His impact went far beyond Jiu Jitsu — he researched health tirelessly, mentored his students through life's challenges, and was known to drop everything to help someone in need. There are many who credit him with literally saving their lives.
William had a strong Christian faith, and he believed deeply in helping others. His charitable projects included helping the homeless, veterans, first responders and the legally blind. He taught seminars at the Texas School of the Blind and formed his own non-profit, The Vandry Hope Foundation.
William also produced a documentary, Got Pain?, formulated health products, and became a naturopathic practitioner. William's passion for health extended not only to his students, but to any and everyone he saw in pain or in need.
William and Chandra built their school and their life together. With his sudden passing, Chandra is faced with this profound loss and navigating this life without him. There was no life insurance in place, and while Chandra is resilient and working, the sudden transition brings significant financial uncertainty.
Every donation will go directly to Chandra to help cover living expenses, school operations, and the transition ahead as she and the Vandry BJJ community figure out the path forward.
William spent his life taking care of others. Now it's our turn to take care of his family and legacy.
Any amount helps. If you can't donate right now, please share this page to help reach anyone whose life William touched.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
