I’m Paul Bernal’s daughter and my brother and I are trying to raise funds for our father’s final expenses. Dad was a 31 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department. Throughout his extensive career he was able to work at Van Nuys Division, West Valley Division, Air Support Division and Incident Command Post. He gave a lot back to the community by volunteering for Operation Sparkle, military liaison for West Valley Division, saving lives during the Northridge earthquake, being Santa Clause every year at the West Valley Christmas events, countless air shows for Air Support Division, managing booths at the police celebrity golf tournaments and so many events I could go on for hours. He was my mentor, my best friend, my sci fi buddy, my hero and an amazing dad. He is the reason I have such a high respect for our law enforcement and military. He was the one that ignited my passion for helping others and why I became a police dispatcher. He loved being a police officer and we would reminisce for hours about his time with LAPD. He would tell me stories of all the things he did in the academy and his rookie days and how things changed for law enforcement over the years. He enjoyed collecting police/military/fire challenge coins, patches and pins. He was always so generous to so many people. He was a strong and faithful Christian. He fought a long hard battle with liver cancer and was finally called back to the Lord on March 4th. Even in his final hours he was praying with us not to be sad for him, not to mourn him but to live good lives always remembering him and the amazing time we had together. Through the tears we promised him we would even though we were heartbroken inside. I’ll see you when I get there daddy! We love you so much! God bless! Don’t worry we can take it from here!
