In Memory of Navy Corpsman Ryan "Doc" Hasledalen

Donation protected
On February 28th, 2019, Afghanistan veteran and Navy Corpsman Ryan "Doc" Hasledalen tragically took his own life.   He struggled with some specific and particularly horrific events that had taken place in Afghanistan - events in which he played a major and heroic role by medically treating and saving the lives of several near mortally wounded Afghani soldiers. These visceral images from this singular event caused an unbelievable amount of pain for "Doc" and the repeated recollection and questioning of this day had left him weary. "Doc" had left the battlefield but the battlefield didn't leave him.

We who knew and cared for "Doc" will carry a great sadness with us because despite our love for him, we could not save him. We can however, band together and help the ones who loved him. While they are left with so many unanswered questions and so much grief, they also have to figure out how to put their lives back together. "Doc's" girlfriend, Michelle, and her two boys depended on him for so much and now they will be left without a home or the resources to to get one. (Michelle has no legal right to their home as she was not on the loan or the deed.)

"Doc" didn't have an estate to leave behind for the care of Michelle, or her boys. "Doc's" father, Keith, is left with the difficult task of paying for funeral and memorial services out-of-pocket.

It is our goal - and with your assistance - we may be able to offset the majority of these costs. We are estimating the funeral, memorial service, cremation, burial, and headstone to be approximately $15,000. It is also extremely important to us that we assist Michelle and her sons in their relocation in 20 days. We are asking to raise an additional $10,000 for them. She will require about a thousand dollars for utility deposits, a moving van rental, first and last month's rent, and a couple of items of replacement furniture. Additionally, whatever is left over will be used to offset their cost of living, as she has accrued some financial hardship by missing a substantial amount of work relating to "Doc's" death.

Ryan "Doc" Hasledalen was a loved and valued member of the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment Foreign Military Advisory Team family, located aboard Camp Lejeune, NC. We believe that it is our continued duty to honor "Doc's" life by assisting him in providing for his family in his absence. It is only through the much appreciated support, generosity, and goodwill of you, our donors, who will make this possible.
