In Memory of Monkey the Puppy: Create a Sanctuary for Strays

Hi, my name is Mariana, and I’m starting this fundraiser in memory of my beloved puppy, Monkey, and for all the voiceless animals.

Monkey was a rescued stray who quickly became part of our family. He was kind, playful, and full of love, especially for the neighbor’s puppy, who became his best friend. They would often visit each other’s homes, playing joyfully between our yards. It was innocent and beautiful.

But the only difference was that they were evil, and we were not. Monkey was poisoned simply because he was a stray, just like several other dogs in our neighborhood. His friendship with their puppy, and his presence near their home, was enough for them to see him as unwanted. This senseless act of cruelty took him from us far too soon.

Sadly, in our small town in Mexico, justice isn’t easily served. We were told there was nothing that could be done without solid proof, and that speculation wasn’t enough. But the truth is hard to ignore: every poisoned animal was found dead inside the neighbors’ property. Considering that in places like this, houses are often built into hills with big patios, the animals would be found at the bottom of the hill, which was still their property.

That’s why I’m creating this project: to build a safe refuge in Mexico for stray dogs and cats. A place where they can be protected from abuse, receive food, medical care, and a real chance at life. It will be a sanctuary built with love and built to last.

The location for the refuge faces serious environmental challenges, including:

• Earthquakes (especially in September)

• Heavy rains (from June to October)

• Wildfires caused by seasonal winds (most common in February and March)

But these obstacles only strengthen my commitment. These animals survive the streets; they deserve to survive everything else, too.
