In memory of Michael Darcy

We are pleased to announce that the Newtownstewart and District Branch of the Ulster Defence Regiment Regimental Association are coming on board with Castlederg Young Loyalists Flute Band to raise money to restore the grave of Michael Darcy from Castlederg — a young man whose life was tragically taken far too soon in circumstances that deeply shocked and saddened the entire community.

Michael was returning home from a band parade in Beragh on the 4th June 1988 with some young members of our band when he was brutally shot in the back six times by the IRA as he parked his car at his home in the dergview park area of the town. His life was taken in an act of violence that left his family, friends, and the wider community heartbroken. He was a young man with his whole life ahead of him — someone who was loved, remembered, and never forgotten by those who knew him.

Michael was a proud and loyal member of our band who had the task of teaching the young members to flute, took them to parades and made sure they got home safely. He is still remembered fondly by its members today, and his name is etched into the band’s standard — carried with pride at every parade we attend, ensuring his memory continues to live on.

Years have passed, but the pain of his loss still remains. Sadly, over time, Michael’s grave has fallen into disrepair. For those who visit, it is difficult to see his final resting place not reflecting the dignity, respect, and care that he deserves.

This fundraiser has been created to repair and restore Michael’s grave — to ensure his memory is honoured properly and that there is a peaceful, well-kept place where loved ones can come to remember him.

Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly towards restoring his grave and preserving his memory for future generations. This is about giving Michael the respect he deserves and making sure he is never forgotten. We received a quotation from Armstrong Funeral Directors and the amount to fix the grave is £1800.

Thank you for your kindness, your support, and for helping us honour Michael’s memory.

All receipts will be published on facebook after completion. Any money raised above the total cost of the restoration of the grave will be donated to the Ulster Defence Regiment welfare association
