Our dear friend and classmate, Lu Zhang, started her Wharton Executive MBA (WEMBA) journey at the same time as all of us in May 2018. Last summer, at the end of term 4, she was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer. Lu fought bravely and tenaciously but unfortunately passed away on April 3rd 2020 in Beijing at the age of 37. She is survived by her husband Lun Dong and their 4-year-old son, Lucas.
Lu constantly impressed us with her commitment, work ethic and kindness. We deeply miss her openness, learning from her experiences and knowledge, and her warmth and care for anyone who needed her advice or help. Lu only spent 15 months with us in the classroom but her impact on our class will last forever.
Last November, a few of us visited her at her home in San Francisco before she set off to receive treatment in Beijing. It was heartbreaking to see her family preparing for these difficult circumstances. Their entire wall is covered with family pictures with Lu in hopes that Lucas remembers his time with his mother. It was, sadly, the last time we were able to speak with her.
Lu’s son, Lucas, is now four years old. He does not quite understand what happened to his dear mother. He will have to grow up without his mother’s unconditional love and support. As Lu’s extended family, we wanted to share our respect and admiration for Lu and honor her last wish - that her son attend Wharton, or at least have the opportunity and encouragement to pursue a higher education.
We believe the best way to honor Lu is to show her son the unconditional support she would have. To accomplish this, we plan to use the proceeds from this fundraiser to set up an account for Lucas Dong at Wells Fargo under the California Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA). Donations to this account benefit the child directly and the designee may not be changed, although the account is held in custodianship until the child reaches age 18. We would like to begin a donation process now, and honor Lu by asking for yearly donations on her birthday, every year until Lucas is 18 years of age.
We hope this small act of kindness toward Lucas will reflect the many acts of kindness shown to all of us by Lu. Please give what you can, and contact us if you have any questions.
Thank you!
